About The Planning Board
The Southern Pines Planning Board is an advisory authority to the Southern Pines Town Council.
The Planning Board has many duties related to the growth, development and redevelopment of the Town and its surrounding extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction. Therefore, the Board may be asked to conduct studies and make recommendations to the Council regarding plans, goals and objectives. Once this is done these plans must be carried out in a coordinated and efficient manner and recommended to the Council in the form of policies, ordinances, and administrative procedures.
Other ways that Planning Board members use their talents, energies, and expertise is when the Council asks that they support advisory committee members who have been appointed to assist the Board with its responsibilities with respect to a particular subject area. Some of these areas of consideration might be a comprehensive plan, thoroughfare plan, bikeway path, housing plans or an economic development plan.

The agenda for the upcoming meeting of the Planning Board will generally be posted on the website by 5:00 PM on the Friday before a meeting.

Planning Board Rules of Procedure
Members
Its membership consists of seven members - five residing within Town limits and two residing within the extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ).
Planning Board members are appointed for three-year staggered terms and may not be appointed for more than two successive complete terms.
